MORE INFORMATION

See a delightful show of nodding bluebell-like flowers climbing up all manner of garden structures during the warm summer months.

Very similar to the parent species of Sollya heterophylla, however ‘Ultra Blue’ stays true to its name and produces an abundance of dainty dark azure blue flowers, while also boasting a stronger branching habit to create a full and dense appearance with a great show of blooms.

This half-hardy bluebell creeper grows remarkable evergreen foliage, which forms a perfect backdrop for the abundance of flowers borne from June to September.

The climbing nature of ‘Ultra Blue’ makes it a perfect patio climber for training over a pergola or arch. This beauty will also make an impact when grown up an obelisk or trellis, to support the twin stems.

Sollya performs well in sheltered, sunny spots in mild parts of the UK, or can be grown in containers in cooler conditions, to be moved inside the greenhouse or conservatory when the winter weather comes.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to be planted out.

Care Guide

Planting advice for Sollya heterophylla:

  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and three times wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed, which is a process called backfilling.
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar of compost, gravel or bark.
  • If planting in a pot, use a good quality compost such as our premium, professional compost.

Aftercare advice for Sollya heterophylla:

  • Tolerant of temperatures down to -5°C, however in frost-prone areas we recommend you bring your plant under cover.
  • Keep well-watered during the summer, especially in the first year of planting. Water sparingly during the winter months.
  • Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly in flowering months.
  • Apply a winter mulch and if you are in a frost prone area or move the plant indoors into a cool, light room.

Pruning advice for Sollya heterophylla:

  • In spring cut back the flowered shoots to 2-3 buds high.
